After passing it by several times before shopping trips at the Waterfront and seeing numerous Facebook posts raving about the food, I finally made it to the Tin Front Cafe for dinner.
The place is a trendy oasis on a somewhat barren stretch of 8th Ave. in Homestead; though judging by the small eateries and artist studios that are popping up in the area, something tells me it won't be barren for long. The atmosphere of the Tin Front is warm and inviting, with soft, dim lighting and when I was there, the soundtrack consisted of mellow Beatles tunes.
The place has a full bar with a wide variety of flavored and infused vodkas. While I stuck with wine, the server (who I assume is also the owner) happily whipped up a habanero and jalapeno martini with a chili powder rim for the folks sitting next to us. While the wine menu was succinct and tasteful, the pour was a bit on the small side, IMO. And for $6 per glass, you want to get what you pay for. There was also a nice list of seasonal beers (bottles and drafts) available.
On to the food...we started with an appetizer of baked brie with apple and spiced walnuts and a bowl of the four bean chili with cilantro and cheddar. The brie was fresh and the chili was flavorful and seasoned just right. For main courses, we shared the butternut squash lasagna and the risotto-stuffed portabella cap with sauteed spinach. Both meals were delicious and showcased the region's more robust fall ingredients nicely. I personally enjoyed the flavors of the squash ravioli more, though the sauteed spinach was extremely flavorful and cooked perfectly.
Overall, the meal was hearty and left us feeling all warm and fuzzy inside. Not a particularly easy feat, considering the Tin Front is a vegetarian restaurant, no meat on the menu. The chefs are obviously very good at what they do, and take the time to consider the best ways to incorporate seasonal ingredients.
Also, I hear the brunch here is amazing....Yep, I'll be back!
